Travel is a Privilege

Not everyone is able to travel. No tip, mindset change, or advice can help many who dream of travel achieve it. Those of us who travel are a privileged few.

My last post, I enjoyed that science has confirmed it’s okay to spend all your money on travel.  I’ve been lucky enough to travel much of my adult life and I’m privileged to do so; however, I worked hard to get here.

I grew up with two brothers in a family without a lot of extra money.  We didn’t travel for sure and most of our family vacations were spent camping save for one time we road tripped through California to a number of amusement parks.  The first real bit of traveling I did was to El Salvador when I was sixteen on a missions trip which I worked and volunteered a number of hours to make happen.

Since then, I didn’t really do a lot of traveling until I graduated from college, moved to Portland, and joined the Couch Surfing community which helped raise the desire and gave me options to make traveling in my life a reality.

I’m lucky enough to have a well paid skill that has a lot of doors open to me in the field of software engineering.  I work a normal 9-5, save up money, and then travel.  A large amount of my traveling is made affordable by “travel hacking.”  With the majority of my flights made very affordable, lodging covered using couch surfing or hostels, I’m able to get most anywhere without spending too much.

One of the biggest reasons I’ve created this site is to share how I do what I do.  Hopefully, with time, you too can build up the resources to do what I make happen on a regular basis.

One opportunity being made for those less fortunate is FLYTE — a foundation to help high schools take economically disadvantaged students on educational trips overseas.  Go check it out and perhaps help if you see so inclined to do so.

Travel is a privilege and one I will keep enjoying.  Someday soon, perhaps you can too.
